Conservatives Promise More Control Over Aid Spending

Odd to have a blog title that sounds like a news headline, but that’s essentially what this story is. The Conservatives have announced that, if elected, they will hand over control of a portion of the government aid budget to a popular decision making process, allowing people to vote for what they want to support.

A top idea in principle, although it has seemingly attracted criticism along the lines of ‘the public don’t know as much as we do about this’ from certain sectors, seemingly missing the point that an element of this project should be about educating the public before they give their response. Another criticism that smaller causes will be beaten by larger and more popular ones doesn’t seem to stand up either, as the way things are currently proposed, it seems this project will allow smaller projects a platform for greater public attention. It’s then up to them to get their message across in the most engaging way possible.

In essence, if this is properly run, then this should level the playing field in terms of aid funding, and genuinely hand back control of an element of government spending to people. One to keep an eye on.
