Bristol City Council’s New Website

Posted by Gez Smith on Mar 09 2010 | Conversations, Debate, Engagement, Ideas-sharing, Social media, web 2.0 and other buzzwords

I'm just back from this event, getting together the 'great and good' of the Bristol digital media community to discuss what the council should do with its new website. The backstory is that the council has seen that its current site doesn't fit what is needed either internally or externally, and so they're currently in procurement for a new CMS. After that, they're up for suggestions from the digital… read more

15 Ways PCTs Can Improve Consultation On Difficult Issues

Posted by Gez Smith on Mar 04 2010 | Advice, Consultation, Conversations, Engagement, Good examples, Opinion research, Projects and client work

Amongst the different public sector organisations, PCTs are very often responsible for decisions that are affect huge numbers of people and cover issues that people feel strongly passionate about. These issues and decisions are often difficult. This makes it all the more important to consult on them, but at the same time all the more daunting a prospect. We've been running online consultations since 2004, frequently around difficult or contentious issues. Particularly… read more

Politics And Twitter

Posted by Gez Smith on Jan 27 2010 | Conversations, Debate, Democracy and government, Engagement, Good examples, Social media, web 2.0 and other buzzwords

Interesting report out from Tweetminster the other day about the amount of politicians and political parties using Twitter at the moment, which hopefully adds a bit of context to the whole 'This will be an internet' election meme around at the moment. More interesting in many ways though is the response to it from the political chattering types, and Tweetminster's response to that. Lots of useful stuff… read more

WhiteHouse.gov: Anywhere

Posted by AnthonyG on Jan 20 2010 | Conversations, Delib news and events, Good examples

President Obamas' administration want to know what citizens think, they are proving this by encouraging dialogues between state and citizens, something we were proudly able to help with last year using our Dialogue Platform. Now they want you to watch, listen and understand them via the new iPhone app WhiteHouse.gov: Anywhere. The emergence of internet enabled phones and their proliferation will certainly add an interesting paradigm to the Opengov… read more

15 ways to maximise participation for your budget consultation

Posted by AdamC on Jan 12 2010 | Advice, Consultation, Conversations, Democracy and government, Engagement, Good examples

Moving to an online-based budget consultation is a great first step in increasing engagement - and given the potential to connect via the internet, I thought it would be a good idea to put together a document containing tips on how to boost response levels for an online budget consultation. After four years of working with Councils on budget consultation, we've seen a lot of strategies for maximising the… read more

Finally, Someone Just Uses Wordpress!

Posted by Gez Smith on Jan 05 2010 | Advice, Conversations, Debate, Engagement, Good examples

Close to my heart this one, not just because it's to do with my home city, nor because I used to work there, but because the broader issue has been a personal bugbear of mine for ages. Namely, public sector organisations trying to use discussion forums.

Have said it before, but… read more

Making things better from a hospital bed

Posted by ChrisQ on Dec 02 2009 | Conversations, Delib news and events, Engagement

Pain can be a beautiful thing.  And in my case quite an inspiring thing too.  For the last 5 days I've been stuck in hospital with severe back pains - which have meant I've been totally bed bound, and completely dependent on the nurses at Kings College Hospital London (who have - by the way - been really great!) Anyway, lying in bed - in pain - inspired me… read more

BBC Digital Revolution

Posted by MichaelaD on Aug 27 2009 | Conversations

This one appeared in my inbox under 'general interest' and I think its prime for sharing. The BBC Digital Revolution project is looking to crowd-source ideas and content on how 20 years of the World WideWeb has changed our lives, which they will collate into four 1 hour documentaries to be shown on BBC 2. Here is their take on why people should contribute: Why should I? This story will reach a wide… read more

Discussing the good and the not so good…

Posted by AdamC on Jul 09 2009 | Bad examples, Consultation, Conversations, Democracy and government, Good examples, Participation

As part of my daily activities with Delib, I’ve been speaking to council employees who are involved in budget consultation at their various establishments. Because of this, I've been fortunate enough to quickly gain a good understanding of the differing councils’ perspectives on consultation. As you’d expect, there are some councils that run very extensive budget consultation and some that, it would be fair to say, seem to be avoiding… read more
