Bristol City Council’s New Website

Posted by Gez Smith on Mar 09 2010 | Conversations, Debate, Engagement, Ideas-sharing, Social media, web 2.0 and other buzzwords

I'm just back from this event, getting together the 'great and good' of the Bristol digital media community to discuss what the council should do with its new website. The backstory is that the council has seen that its current site doesn't fit what is needed either internally or externally, and so they're currently in procurement for a new CMS. After that, they're up for suggestions from the digital… read more

15 Ways PCTs Can Improve Consultation On Difficult Issues

Posted by Gez Smith on Mar 04 2010 | Advice, Consultation, Conversations, Engagement, Good examples, Opinion research, Projects and client work

Amongst the different public sector organisations, PCTs are very often responsible for decisions that are affect huge numbers of people and cover issues that people feel strongly passionate about. These issues and decisions are often difficult. This makes it all the more important to consult on them, but at the same time all the more daunting a prospect. We've been running online consultations since 2004, frequently around difficult or contentious issues. Particularly… read more

Online Engagement – Social Media Vs SEO

Posted by Gez Smith on Feb 10 2010 | Advice, Bad examples, Democracy and government, Engagement, Social media, web 2.0 and other buzzwords

Here at Delib, we're the kind of people that like to learn from each other and from what the other companies in our group do. We had a really interesting talk a few weeks ago on social media vs 'search engine optimisation' (SEO), from Tim in our sister viral marketing agency Rubber Republic

Consultation Institute Wrong On e-Participation

Posted by Gez Smith on Feb 02 2010 | Bad examples, Consultation, Democracy and government, Engagement, Participation

We like the Consultation Institute. Their courses are interesting and they've come from nothing to national prominence in just a few years, all impressive stuff. But occasionally, when it comes to online consultation, they seem to miss a few tricks. Their newsletter this week is interesting, reflecting as it does on media stories that the government may be putting its new 'Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act' on hold. For… read more

Politics And Twitter

Posted by Gez Smith on Jan 27 2010 | Conversations, Debate, Democracy and government, Engagement, Good examples, Social media, web 2.0 and other buzzwords

Interesting report out from Tweetminster the other day about the amount of politicians and political parties using Twitter at the moment, which hopefully adds a bit of context to the whole 'This will be an internet' election meme around at the moment. More interesting in many ways though is the response to it from the political chattering types, and Tweetminster's response to that. Lots of useful stuff… read more

Finally, Someone Just Uses Wordpress!

Posted by Gez Smith on Jan 05 2010 | Advice, Conversations, Debate, Engagement, Good examples

Close to my heart this one, not just because it's to do with my home city, nor because I used to work there, but because the broader issue has been a personal bugbear of mine for ages. Namely, public sector organisations trying to use discussion forums.

Have said it before, but… read more

News Roundup

Posted by Gez Smith on Jan 04 2010 | Advice, Democracy and government

It's been too cold to be doing much over the festive break, so interesting stuff online has been excellent in keeping cabin fever at bay. Two articles in particular caught the eye in the last week, which seem worth sharing. First of all, as a warm up to our debate in a couple of weeks, here's an article from the Guardian claiming, somewhat boldy, that 'the 2010 election will be

Who Doesn’t Use The Web?

Posted by Gez Smith on Oct 28 2009 | Democracy and government, Engagement

A perennial theme of this blog, because it's a perennial theme from some people we meet. So it was interesting to read this article from the Observer about people who have never used the internet.  It's a bit of a planted story for the Race Online 2012, but it's disturbingly novel to hear real accounts from people who haven't used the web before and the barriers that seemed to… read more

Trafigura And The Guardian – Never Forget Who You Are

Posted by Gez Smith on Oct 13 2009 | Bad examples, Democracy and government, Engagement, Social media, web 2.0 and other buzzwords

IMG_0727 I'm in the London office today, and just took a photo of this postcard on the wall, thinking it would fit with a blog post at some point. Then it suddenly struck me, today's main internet news in this part of the world fits it perfectly.  You can read more about it elsewhere, but in essence, a gagging order was… read more
