Queen Rania asks people to “join the conversation”

Posted by ChrisQ on Apr 04 2008 | Debate, Democracy and government, Engagement, Social media, web 2.0 and other buzzwords

This has been our for a while now, but I’ve only just caught it… but better late than never…
Queen Rania (Queen of Jordan and general looker) is running (or was running last year) a campaign to try to get people to change their views of the Arab world through dialogue with each other - using the power of YouTube.
Her stereotypes campaign is interesting to us not just because she’s using… read more

Stand by your ham

Posted by ChrisQ on Mar 15 2008 | Good examples, Participation

Whilst surfing the interweb, I came across this new campaign set up by pig farmers. I don’t know who has masterminded it, but it’s an example of internet campaigning at its best - integrating a viral campaign together with an online petition. Simple but effective.

As part of the campaign, Pig farmers have recorded a new version of Tammy Wynette’s 1968 classic Stand by your Man as part of… read more

Coca-Cola starts conversing with the world (at last)

Posted by ChrisQ on Feb 06 2008 | Conversations, Debate

Big American corporations get a lot of stick for their old school approach to business and communications. The commonly held perception (which is 99% true) is that corporations are still stuck in the broadcast model of communications, where multi-million pound media budgets force messages home. The “don’t talk back” school of communications.

And one of the biggest offenders in the past has been Coca-Cola. So it’s nice to… read more

Delib and Microsoft

Posted by ChrisQ on Feb 01 2008 | Delib news and events, Democracy and government

We may not have given $30 billion away to charity, however Delib and Microsoft have more in common than meets the eye.  Yesterday, Bill Gates was in London giving a speech to the Institute of Directors about the internet, and how it has democratised the world - with things like blogs empowering individuals and helping give people a voice.

It so happened that at the exact same time, I… read more

It’s official - the internet influences politics (in the US at least)

Posted by ChrisQ on Jan 14 2008 | Democracy and government

Some new data from the Pew Research Center puts some numbers around the growing influence of the Internet on political campaigns. None of this is too surprising, but it quantifies what we already know: that the Internet is becoming more important in political campaigns, especially among younger people. Each election, the Internet grows stronger and stronger. This data suggests that in 2008 the Internet may still not be the deciding… read more

China censors YouTube

Posted by ChrisQ on Jan 04 2008 | Democracy and government

We’ve always advocated YouTube as one of the most effective e-democracy tools around, and it seems that the Chinese government has been listening to us (that’s right!) as China has moved to censor and control online video websites under new measures that could block YouTube and other services in China.
Under the new regulations that will be in place starting January 31, sites that provide video programming or allow… read more

Citizenspace.com relaunches

Posted by ChrisQ on Dec 04 2007 | Engagement, Projects and client work, Social media, web 2.0 and other buzzwords

Drum roll . . . trrrrrrrrrrr . . . we’re proud to announce the re-launch of CitizenSpace.com!

Citizenspace was originally launched as a consultation portal in 2005, however in the last few months we’ve been having a re-think about what best to do with it and we decided on . . . well . . . a space for citizens (hence the name).

The overall (and fairly loose) idea is… read more

Better late than never . . .

Posted by ChrisQ on Dec 04 2007 | Good examples, Social media, web 2.0 and other buzzwords

YourPlaceormine.org.uk is way out of date (over a year old now), however it’s definitely worth a mention.  Run as the virtual debate platform for English Heritage’s national conference, the site is a great example of making the most out of mixing blogging platforms with multi-media features such as podcasting.

The… read more

Videocracy

Posted by ChrisQ on Nov 20 2007 | Democracy and government

Carrying on my obsession with putting -ocracy at the end of words to make clever sounding blog posts, here’s a quick insight into how video’s playing an important part in US politics.

A new site www.10questions.com has recently launched allowing members of the public to pose questions to Presidential candidates.  It’s got some neat functions like voting and commenting + is generally v.well produced, with a… read more

Face-ocracy

Posted by ChrisQ on Nov 16 2007 | Debate, Good examples, Opinion research, Participation, Social media, web 2.0 and other buzzwords

There’s obviously been a lot of hype about Facebook recently, with brands hailing it as the future of advertising and geeks hailing it as the future of the world.  To jump on the bandwagon, I’d like to hail it as the future of democracy.

Well, maybe not the whole future of democracy, however it does really (yes really) work as an e-democracy tool, and has seen proper democratic outcomes over the… read more
